Secure app development: Is your data safe with AI?

You should ask. AI tools read your documents, chatbots talk to strangers, and code gets written by machines in minutes. Secure app development means building so that a tricked chatbot, a leaked key, or a reused password still cannot reach your customers' data. Here is what can go wrong, how to check your own app in two minutes, and what we build into every project.

Most leaks start with a small gap nobody checked.

What a data leak costs you

Customer trust

One leaked list or hijacked account and people stop typing their details into your app.

Rules and contracts

HIPAA, PCI, and state privacy laws apply whether the leak came from your code or your AI vendor.

Surprise bills

A leaked AI key or an unthrottled chatbot can cost more in a weekend than the feature cost to build.

Six risks

Pick one to see what it looks like in a real app, how we stop it, and the question to ask whoever builds yours.

Write follow-ups for these clients

Free plan: chats may be used to train the model
Business API: not used for training by default

Staff paste customer details into free AI tools. Some consumer plans can use those chats to improve their models.

What it looks like

A sales rep pastes a client list into a free chatbot to write follow-up emails. Nobody approved it, and nobody can say where that data sits now.

How we stop it

We call AI models through paid business API accounts. OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google do not train on business API data by default. Names, emails, and account numbers are removed before a prompt leaves your system when the task does not need them.

Ask your developer: Which AI provider sees our data, and under which terms?

Inside an AI feature

Where your data goes when your app uses AI

Every question passes three checkpoints before and after the model sees it.

  1. Step 1You askA signed-in user asks your app a question.
  2. Step 2Permission checkThe app fetches only data this user is allowed to see.
  3. Step 3Personal details removedNames, emails, and card numbers are masked.
  4. Step 4AI modelBusiness API terms. Your data is not used for training.
  5. Step 5Logged and returnedThe answer is checked, logged, and shown.

App security checklist: how safe is your app?

Ten yes or no questions. Answer for the app you have today, or for the one you are about to build.

0 of 10 answered
  1. 1.Does every page and API of your app run over HTTPS?

  2. 2.Are passwords hashed, and never stored or emailed as plain text?

  3. 3.Can staff and admin accounts use two-step sign-in?

  4. 4.If a user changes an ID in a link, are they blocked from other people's data?

  5. 5.Are API keys kept out of the app and out of your code repository?

  6. 6.Does a developer review code before it goes live, including AI-written code?

  7. 7.Do your AI tools run on business plans that do not train on your data?

  8. 8.Can your AI features only reach data the current user is allowed to see?

  9. 9.Do you have automatic backups, and have you tested restoring one?

  10. 10.Are packages and frameworks updated when security fixes come out?

It depends on the plan. Free and consumer plans may use your chats to improve their models, depending on your settings. Business and API plans from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google do not train on your data by default. For anything involving customer data, use a business plan or an app built on the API, and keep sensitive details out of consumer chat tools.
